The promises of God
A short collection to help us once again pray according to the promises of God.
A frail looking, quiet woman was on board a liner traveling to India. She had said good-bye to parents and sisters in a lovely, old-world home not far from the King’s private residence in Windsor Great Park. Her father was one of England’s leading metallurgists. She was a doctor. For some years she had ministered to the bodies and souls of India’s masses in a mission hospital, but the call of the regions beyond had been constantly sounding in her ears. There in the north lay the land of Nepal. Enclosed in its mountain fastnesses were 6,000,000 people who, through the intense conservatism of its rulers, were still shut out from all ‘Western influences.’
On her return to England, in her quiet home away from the rush of hospital life, she had time to listen to God. The voice was unmistakeable. She was to pull up stakes and move on. Others could do the hospital work. But on Nepal’s 500-mile frontier she had learned that for the west 250 miles there was no missionary witness. The people move to and fro over five great passes into inland Nepal, without a person to tell them that the Father’s arms lie open to them.
She was frail, and a single woman. Her daring project was to go and live in one of these frontier villages. It meant that no white companion would be near her and no human protection in case of illness and danger.
No wonder that the committee of her mission, keen though they were for India’s evangelization, did not feel that they could take responsibility for such a venture. She could go, if she was sure of her guidance, and their sympathies would be with her, but financially and in every way it must be her own decision. Be she was sure of her call.
Surrounded by the comforts and friends of the homeland, perhaps the stark realities of the undertaking did not come home to her. But when the last cable that bound her to loved ones and Christian supporters had been cut, as the liner ploughed its way across the Indian Ocean, in Catherine Harbord’s cabin the age-old drama of the brook Jabbok was re-enacted.
Fear almost overwhelmed her. ‘There wrestled a man with her till the breaking of the day.’ ‘A great temptation came to me to be allowed to ask to stay in hospital work. The difficulties and possible dangers seemed overwhelming. The Lord made me face it all out in every detail. He told me He had never promised us safety in His service: there was no promise of being kept from sickness, death or worse. But He has promised to save us by bringing us victorious through them.’
‘He showed me all that might happen and brought me through till I could say, “Whatever happens, the very worst I can think of, still I can never doubt Him. I shall know that it is part of His loving plan for me.”’
Broken, blessed, there rose from her knees in that cabin a new woman, a prince with God who could testify, ‘From the moment that I could honestly say this with no reservations, joy and peace flooded my spirit, and He has never let me know fear since.’

Knowing the Promises of God
Do we know the promises of God as Catherine Harbord, and so many others who have taken Him at His word, did?
She wrestled, great temptation came, yet the promises of God strengthened her. She could hide herself here and know she was safe within the cleft of a rock that could not be moved. Is there any limit then to what God can accomplish through such a hidden life? Her story is just one of so many examples.
When speaking to a few men recently who felt moved to pray according to the promises of God, I inquired, “Yes, but do you know what the promises are? If not, how will you pray according to them?”
Their reply echoes many of us, “We meant more of the general promises of God. Like His faithfulness, goodness, kindness.”
Let us not stop at His attributes when so many specific promises lie ready to be seized afresh. Take comfort as well, the same promises we take hold of, have been likewise held by so many before us. He did not fail them then and He will not fail us now.
To remedy our ignorance, and that we might once again be a people who take Him at His word, I’ve been working alongside a good friend, brother, and Kingdom Heard subscriber (thanks Forrest!) to put together a list of the promises of God.
We are certain to have missed many, and this is a work in progress, so if you have a contribution, please leave it in the comments or send me an email.
The list below will certainly get cut-off if you are viewing this in your email inbox. To view the whole thing, click on the header at the top of the email or on the button below.

Quotes from outside the Bible
“Your testimony is in here. You are what I say you are. Your testimony begins in Psalm 40 and it’s all over this Bible.” (Milton Green, personal testimony)
“Unless the Bible is to us in very truth the Word of God, our prayers can be naught but sheer mockery. There never has been a revival except where there have been Christian men and women thoroughly believing in and whole-heartedly pleading the promises of God.” (Jonathan Goforth, “By My Spirit”)
“I have seen it long enough in the Bible, but I believe it now as a living reality.” (Hudson Taylor, The Way to Happiness and Power)
“When I began the orphan work more than fifteen years ago, it was for the definite and especial purpose that, by means of it, the unconverted might see, through the answers of prayer that I received in connection with it, that there is verily reality in the things of God; and that the children of God might have their faith strengthened by means of it, and might be encouraged, in all simplicity, to deal with God under every circumstance, and trust in him at all times.” (George Mueller, The Life of Trust: Chapter 20 - A New Victory Of Faith)
“The Lord is always faithful. People say, ‘Lord, increase our faith.’ Did not our Lord rebuke His disciples for that prayer? It is not great faith you need, but faith in a great God. We need a faith that rests on a great God, and expects Him to keep His own word and do just as He has promised.” (Hudson Taylor)
“God's promises are not empty shells, they are real things! He does not give us empty promises, but promises we may exercise our faith in until we have full possession. Blessings are wrapped up in promises. The faithful in Hebrews 11 ‘received not the promises’ (Heb. 11:13). The meaning is, they did not receive the land of Canaan, or Christ in the flesh, right then. The soul does not look for fulfillment immediately, but in heaven! Faith looks to christ, and heaven, and happiness as it is in - promise. It dares not expect anything from God but by a promise. God has engaged himself by promise. In his faithfulness, he will do it. The soul, then, looks to the promise, and in that it looks to Christ and Grace, and heaven and happiness and all good things. Faith comes to God through his word and pleads is promise. Christ and heaven are wrapped in the promises. In the promises we are rich indeed, for God will perform them. Think of God's nature, his mercy, truth and justice. He must perform his promises. Think of his great name Jehovah, which gives being to the world and all things, nay, and that will turn all things that are now into nothing. This Jehovah has made these promises of Life everlasting and Grace to bring us there. He promised us perseverance and comfort under crosses and afflictions, and provision in our journey. That great Jehovah, which has given being to all, is faithful, he has bound himself, he has laid his faithfulness as security, he will make all good what he has promised! The soul, after it sees the promise, may rise up and look to God. All the promises of good things to come we cannot think of too often. We need to return to the promises again and again. Satan puts clouds and darkness before the soul every day, so we should every day repeat the promises and the hope of them.” (Richard Sibbes)
“Prayer is a sincere, sensible, affectionate pouring out of the heart or soul to God, through Christ, in the strength and assistance of the Holy Spirit, for such things as God hath promised, or according to the Word, for the good of the church, with submission, in faith, to the will of God.” (John Bunyan, Prayer)
