We may look back on the times we took matters into our own hands, all while claiming to trust in God, as the moments of our greatest defeats.
We wanted to wait on Him, but it’s taking too long.
We desired to follow Him wherever He leads, but we didn’t prefer His route or destination.
We had a quicker timetable, a more surefire plan, a better solution.
And so when we saw that what we had made for ourselves was in fact good, pleasurable, and desirable for our purposes, we took and ate. Even giving some of it to those alongside, “Here, this is a better way.”
Can God redeem, use, and cleanse such rebellious moments? Certainly, and He does.
Will we still taste the bitter herbs of our betrayal and weep sorely once we realize what we’ve done? Just as certainly, yes.
Therefore I say, “Wait, wait on the Lord.” For here, waiting patiently upon His reply, though it may tarry, we will find our greatest triumphs.
“Patiently wait for God alone, my soul!”
Trust Him at all times, you people!
Pour out your hearts before Him. God is our shelter.”
“How great are Your works, O Lord!
Your plans are very intricate!
The spiritually insensitive do not recognize this;
The fool does not understand this.”
“Do not trust in what you can gain by oppression.
Do not put false confidence in what you can gain by robbery.”
“When I refused to confess my sin, my whole body wasted away,
While I groaned in pain all day long.
Then I confessed my sin.
I said, ‘I will confess my rebellious acts to the Lord.’
And then You forgave my sins.
How blessed is the one whose rebellious acts are forgiven.”
“An evil person suffers much pain, but the Lord’s faithfulness overwhelms the one who trusts in Him.”
“For this reason every one of Your faithful followers should pray to You while there is a window of opportunity.”
“For God alone I patiently wait.
He is the One who delivers me.”1
